Afternoon Tea - Recommended Dress Code

In the noble tradition of Britain’s grand country houses, Afternoon Tea at Smithmore Castle is a ceremonious affair. Guests are kindly asked to attire themselves with grace, refinement, and an appreciation for the elegance of the age.

FOR LADIES

Silhouettes & Dresses

  • Tea-length dresses, elegant day gowns, or refined skirt ensembles in classic fabrics (silk, muslin, fine wool, brocade).

  • Hemlines should fall at the knee or below; sweeping midi or modest Victorian-inspired silhouettes are warmly encouraged.

  • Gentle waistlines, structured bodices, and graceful sleeves are most becoming.

Colours & Patterns

  • Soft pastels, muted florals, ivory, dove grey, sapphire, burgundy, or any palette befitting a gentle afternoon.

  • Avoid excessively bright neon tones or modern athletic fabrics.

Hats & Millinery

  • Fascinators, decorative headpieces, tasteful hats, or simple combs are delightfully appropriate.

  • Elaborate fascinators may be worn, provided they do not obstruct another guest’s view.

Footwear

  • Court shoes, heeled slippers, refined flats, or vintage-style boots.

  • No trainers, flip-flops, or casual sandals.

Accessories & Presentation

  • Gloves (short or wrist-length), delicate jewellery, and petite handbags are all welcome.

  • Hair should be neatly styled or elegantly pinned.

  • Perfume should be subtle, never overpowering.

FOR GENTLEMEN

Suits & Jackets

  • Tailored suit, morning coat, or smart blazer with trousers.

  • Colours such as charcoal, navy, camel, or fine checks are entirely suitable.

  • A waistcoat is optional but highly esteemed.

Shirts & Neckwear

  • Crisp, collared dress shirts in white or subdued tones.

  • Neckwear is required: tie, cravat, or ascot.

  • Bow ties may be worn if understated.

Footwear

  • Polished leather shoes, Oxfords, brogues, or Edwardian-style boots.

  • No trainers, open-toed shoes, or casual loafers.

Accessories & Grooming

  • Pocket squares, signet rings, subtle cufflinks, and tasteful timepieces are fitting accents.

  • Grooming should be immaculate; facial hair neatly trimmed.
